Gonna purchase the Canon EOS 1000D, how long do you think it will 'last' me?

My parents ave garred to get me the said camera. I feel guilt about making them spend so much because photography will be just a hobby. So I want to know, how long do you think I can continue this camera before it becomes obsolete? Or it's features are outdated? If it's not long I won't buy it because it will be a waste of money!
